Vulnerability Management: From Scan to Prioritization
CySA+'s single biggest domain (26%) isn't about running a scanner — it's about deciding what to fix first when the scanner hands you 400 findings. This module covers the real lifecycle: scanning, scoring, prioritizing by actual risk, and communicating what won't get fixed today.
The Scan Is the Easy Part
Every vulnerability management program runs the same four-stage lifecycle: identify (scan for known weaknesses), evaluate (how bad is this, really, in this environment), remediate (patch, configure around it, or accept the risk), and report (prove the loop closed). Most junior analysts think the job is stage one — running Nessus or OpenVAS and generating a PDF. The actual skill, and what CySA+ spends most of this domain testing, is stage two: a scanner finds thousands of theoretical weaknesses, and almost none of them matter equally. A critical CVE on an internet-facing server is a five-alarm fire; the same CVE on an air-gapped lab machine that gets rebuilt every Friday is a rounding error. Vulnerability management is triage, not tool operation.
