IT Foundations · about 20 min

Identify hardware and port capabilities from a specification, then plan safe checks before opening or replacing anything.

What the main parts do

The CPU executes instructions. RAM is working memory; ordinary RAM loses its contents without power. Storage retains data across power cycles but can still fail or lose data. The motherboard connects components. A desktop power supply converts electrical power for the system.

Price, speed, and cooling depend on the design. A CPU is not always the most expensive component, and not every system uses a fan. More RAM helps only when memory pressure is a constraint; it does not repair a network or storage fault.
